Resurrecting Deep Throat
What is it with Bob Woodward? It's like he just can't be content unless the whole nation knows he has a secret.
First there was deep throat, and granted, that was a huge secret for many years. But once we all found out that it was just Mark Felt, the whole word was like, "Who?" I think it the lack of a whoop-de-doo was kind of a letdown for Woodward. First off, Vanity Fair scooped him on his own story. Second, it was news for about 15 minutes, and everyone moved on. The shroud of mystery was gone and Woodward was no longer a vault, but just a journalist. (But to his credit, a credible and well-respected journalist.)The mystery often is better than the truth.
So now, he comes out and says that in fact someone told him about Valerie Plame first. So na na na. He's got a secret once more. But I bet Woodward doesn't let this secret sit in the vault for two long. In fact, he's already hinting and saying who his source is NOT. So only about 5 1/2 billion more hints, and we'll have his source nailed.
Since when are journalists supposed to be the news? Is there really not enough going on in the world that journalists can't just suffer in jail for a few days to protect their sources like old times, instead of brokering deals with the government and doling out hints right and left? Next thing you know, the headline on the New York Times or the Washington Post will be: "Woodward eats ham sandwich at deli, denies reports that meat cutter leaked CIA info"
Can't we all just go back to being mad about the President, the war, the weather or whatever?

Jenelle,
Your posting has inspired me to read "All the Presidents Men". I read it years ago. You remind me how much I enjoy political history.

Everyone wants their moment of glory. Doesn't he realize that deep throat lives on because of the mystery, not the revelation? Well, let's face it, the name deep throat may be living on for other reasons as well. What in the American government what were they thinking?
